Childish Gambino's 'Heartbeat' Video Fits Song's 'Mood'

'Fans should be able to check this out and just see my visualization of the song,' 'Community' star-turned-rapper tells MTV News.

Don't call Childish Gambino's upcoming "Heartbeat" clip a video; rather, it's a reflection of how the actor-turned-rapper was feeling when he recorded it.

"I do not really have a set of things in mind. I thought the best way to convey the feeling that's in the song was to be confused ourselves," Childish Gambino, a.k.a. "Community" star Donald Glover, told MTV News last week during a break from filming the clip in Van Nuys, California. "I guess when it's all said and done, fans should be able to check this out and just see my visualization of the song."

"Heartbeat" — from CG's debut album, Camp — is an electrified breakup song equipped with pulsating drums and buzzing synth chords. The rapper, who is better known (for now) for his role as Troy Barnes on "Community," enlisted director Kyle Newacheck to shoot the visual. Newacheck directed an episode of the NBC comedy back in 2009.

In the month leading up to his November release, Childish told MTV News that Camp was a "labor of love." With the independently released LP, Gambino aimed to tell a story. "The biggest compliment I can give it is that I like it more than everything else I've done," he said. "I think it's a cohesive piece, and I wanted to tell a whole story with it. Hopefully, the whole album is like a book or a novel where [there's] a through line."

"Heartbeat" is simply a chapter in that story, and its video will be reflective. "This is kinda like the mood of the song," Gambino said. "I wouldn't say it's so much a video as much as it is just a mood."

What are you expecting from Childish's "Heartbeat" video? Let us know in the comments below!

Cartoons to rebuild lives in Haiti

A cartoon-based newspaper in Haiti focuses on human rights, education and health issues - and has the highest circulation in the country.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

?More than half of all Haitians cannot read or write, so foreign aid workers here have had to come up with new ways to reach the people they serve.

One of the more creative initiatives to date has been a cartoon-based newspaper, Chimen Lakay (?The Way Home?), currently the largest-circulation newspaper in the country. Averaging 400,000 copies per issue, it?s the only mass-market publication in Creole.

?Haitians are extremely proud of their culture,? says Leonard Doyle, head of communications at the International Organization for Migration in Haiti, which publishes the paper. ?And while many are illiterate, a comics-based newspaper is an ideal way of passing on often lifesaving information....?

IN PICTURES: Life in a tent city

Mr. Doyle says the free paper ? illustrated by the lauded Haitian artist Chevelin Pierre ? focuses on self-help and education. It is distributed in Haiti?s most vulnerable communities, including the hundreds of tent camps set up after the massive earthquake two years ago.

Past issues of the paper have focused on curbing violence against women and containing the spread of cholera. Future issues will deal with the forthcoming carnival season and encourage the half a million living in camps since the earthquake to think of creative ways to move back to their communities.

How 3-D Imaging Helped Halt Germany's War Machine in World War II [Video]

Historians, pilots and interpreters recall the early days of surveillance and aerial photography, which helped the British curb Nazi Germany's military advance. A video from NOVA

Before satellite images and drones could pinpoint the exact location of enemy targets, warfare was often more like a game of Battleship: a complex series of guesses based on spotty information.

During World War II the British began to change that. They sent their fastest planes not to drop bombs, but to take pictures. By flying over German territory in planes outfitted with several cameras, pilots built a set of images that overlapped one another and could be viewed stereoscopically?that is, in 3-D. These three-dimensional images enabled the British to see for instance, camouflaged ships that would have not been easily spotted in 2-D images.

In this clip from "3D Spies of WWII" by PBS's NOVA, historians and pilots relive the early days of surveillance imaging to explain how those stereoscopic images worked and how they were used. The entire program, airing on PBS Wednesday, January 18 at 9 P.M. Eastern time, reveals more examples of how these images bolstered British war efforts.

Kno Adds New Features To Smart Textbooks In Attempt To Head Off Apple

kno_web_logo_512Kno might be in a world of hurt come Thursday. That's the day Apple is said to commence its assault on the textbook industry. Even if it's mostly hype, any current textbook alternative companies (like Kno) should be on notice. Apple is gunning for their market. This puts Kno in a precarious position, having been a scrappy start-up that once based its future on a massive, dual-screen digital textbook. Now, several years later, the company is focused on building a digital textbook ecosystem for the iPad and web. Kno just unveiled several new features lauded by the company as "major advances in smart textbook technology" which is a fancy way to describe flashcards and a smart goal page.

Piers Morgan has eventful 1st year at CNN (AP)

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. ? After replacing Larry King last January, it took only 11 days for Piers Morgan's vision of his show to collide with reality.

He was on a plane to Los Angeles with producer Jonathan Wald and as soon as they landed, both cell phones were buzzing with news of political upheaval in Egypt. Wald turned to Morgan and said, "You know, we were wondering when we were first going to go live. Tonight's the night."

So began an eventful year that saw Morgan revise the format of his prime-time show on the fly to emphasize more live interviews, sweat while waiting for Charlie Sheen to arrive for a live show, quit "America's Got Talent" and see his reputation dragged into a phone hacking scandal by journalists in his native Britain.

Through it all, he survived. Morgan may not have lived up to his initial brash boasts about burying the competition, but he didn't fail, either. "Piers Morgan Tonight" viewership was up 9 percent over King's final year, even more among youthful viewers. He marks his first anniversary this week with appearances by Chelsea Handler, Rosie O'Donnell and former President Jimmy Carter.

"It isn't as successful as I'd like it to be," he said in a recent interview. "I'd like to get the ratings significantly higher, and we believe there is a real opportunity this year to put the foot on the gas. But am I pleased with where we ended up after the first year? Yeah, actually, I am. It would be pretty churlish to be overly critical given that we've taken the ratings up."

Morgan's biggest threat came from his past. Before becoming a U.S. television personality, he edited two British tabloids, including Rupert Murdoch's shuttered News of the World, and was involved in questionable practices such as paying bribes to people at rival newspapers. Morgan insisted he never hacked into celebrity phones, ordered anyone to do so or knowingly ran a story based on hacking. No one proved otherwise in a government inquiry that included tense Morgan testimony by video-link in December.

Morgan called the inquiry annoying, less a distraction than "a visitation from the ghost of Christmas past."

"It made me laugh when people said CNN had no idea about my tabloid past," he said. "Of course, they did. The bottom line is, they asked me, `Is this going to be a problem?' and I said no. I said what it will be is a bit of a circus because there are plenty of people back in Britain who would love to drag me into stuff like this, and that's what they've tried to do."

Ken Jautz, executive vice president in charge of CNN U.S., said Morgan and his past were vetted by CNN before he was hired. He would not discuss the specifics of that effort, but noted that "in Piers' case, he has a longstanding and substantial public profile."

CNN believes Morgan has had a strong first year, and that despite his mention in the British tabloid stories his viewership has been growing in the United States, Jautz said.

Morgan figured CNN sought him out because of his celebrity interview program in Britain and planned to model his U.S. show largely on that, with the majority of his show being pre-taped chats with stars.

"I always think if you've been recruited based on a particular thing that you're doing, you tinker with that at your own peril," he said. "Anchoring a live news program wasn't something I'd done before. I wasn't sure I'd be good at it."

The Arab Spring, the devastating tsunami in Japan, deadly tornadoes and Osama bin Laden's killing all forced him to find out fast. The percentage of live vs. taped shows turned out the opposite of what he anticipated, and Morgan believes the show is better for it. It reached the point where one taped guest, Rod Stewart, had his show postponed so many times he sent Morgan a birthday gift with the message, "When are you going to air my (expletive) interview?"

Morgan considers his interview with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu his most pivotal of the year because it put the former tabloid editor and talent show judge in a news context.

The ability to adjust on the fly is important, Jautz said. "The strongest hosts are the ones that have the skill sets and the willingness to be flexible," he said.

Kim Bondy, a former CNN producer who now teaches journalism at the University of New Orleans, said the jury is still out on whether Morgan's show will be a long-term success, and a lot is dependent on the shows around him.

But she said he has an engaging interview style. "He's got an ease to him," she said.

Morgan came into his job full of bluster, promising a "butt-kicking" to his rivals, bragging about making Simon Cowell cry in an interview and trying to start a feud with Madonna. It was, to a large degree, an act. Inside he had his doubts about whether American viewers would embrace his style.

"The enemy to me, I thought, was apathy," he said. "If people were going to be apathetic, I was dead in the water."

A year on the job has honed interviewing skills. "I try to be empathetic but I also try to be very direct," he said.

His most memorable celebrity interview was the live hour with Sheen during the madness that enveloped the actor after he was fired from "Two and a Half Men." The interview was booked, even as Morgan questioned Sheen's reliability. Five minutes before airtime, with Morgan in the studio sweating, Sheen arrived with his entourage. He left Morgan with a copy of one of his drug tests with the note: "To Piers, let's get hammered!"

He's learned to be more selective with celebrity interviews, noting the ratings suffer unless they are big stars, legends or the occasional up-and-comer such as Bruno Mars. He also stayed away from coverage of the Casey Anthony trial, figuring the short-term ratings bump he would receive from talking to the mother found not guilty of killing her daughter wouldn't be worth the damage to the show's reputation.

Wald, Morgan's producer, said he's hoping the show has fewer wild swings in content from night to night, shorter interviews and a greater chance for Morgan to show his personality.

An especially busy news day was key to Morgan's decision to leave NBC's "America's Got Talent." (Howard Stern is his replacement.) On that particular day, he spent an afternoon in Los Angeles judging contestants for the talent show competition, went to the roof of a building where CNN had specially set up a location for him to anchor a live show on the tsunami in Japan, and then went downstairs for another three hours of talent judging.

"Fun though that was, I knew this year would be busy," he said. "Do I really want to be in Florida on Super Tuesday judging dancing Christmas trees? That's the question, and the reality is I don't."

Nationwide strike begins in Nigeria over gas costs (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? A national strike paralyzed much of Nigeria on Monday, with more than 10,000 demonstrators swarming its commercial capital to protest soaring fuel prices and decades of government corruption in the oil-rich country.

Some protesters pulled metal barriers into the street, while others took gasoline from motorbikes to set tires ablaze. Others waved placards bearing an effigy of President Goodluck Jonathan with devil horns and fanged teeth, and showing him pumping fuel at a gas station.

"Our leaders are not concerned about Nigerians. They are concerned about themselves," said protester Joseph Adekolu, a 42-year-old accountant.

Police carrying Kalashnikov rifles and gas masks largely stood by as the demonstrators marched on the first day of an indefinite strike called by labor unions. Protesters also took to the streets in Nigeria's capital of Abuja.

Gas prices have risen from $1.70 per gallon (45 cents per liter) to at least $3.50 per gallon (94 cents per liter) since a government fuel subsidy ended on Jan. 1 at the orders of Jonathan's administration. That spurred a spike in prices for food and transportation across a nation of more than 160 million people, most of whom live on less than $2 a day.

While lawmakers on Sunday rebuked the president's decision, the unions said they would continue their strike.

Bola Adejobi, 53, said she's protesting against more than just fuel costs. For her and many others in Africa's most populous country, the strike represents anger that much of the nation remains without electricity and clean drinking water after more than 50 years of oil production.

"It is high time to take Nigeria into our hands," Adejobi said. "It happened in Egypt. It happened in Libya."

Nigeria's finance minister said the country has been using borrowed funds to maintain the subsidy.

"Greece got where it is now because for years, they didn't do the right thing. They kept borrowing and borrowing to finance development," Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala told local television station Channels TV on Monday. "We can't keep borrowing to finance our development."

Two major unions have said they will maintain the strike despite a court restraining order. A similar situation occurred in 2003, when strikers over eight days attacked shops that remained open, took over air traffic control towers and caused a drop in oil production in a country vital to U.S. energy supplies.

Organizers have called for peaceful protests, but gang members already began stoning vehicles and harassing motorists in Lagos. Some riot police stood on hand at the demonstration site Monday. They quickly became outnumbered by protesters.

The strikes comes as activists have begun a loose-knit group of protests called "Occupy Nigeria," inspired by those near Wall Street in New York. Their anger extends to the government's weak response to ongoing violence in Nigeria by a radical Muslim sect that, according to an Associated Press count, killed at least 510 people last year.

Famous Nigerian authors, including Chinua Achebe, issued a statement Monday saying they support the strike, and warning that if left unattended the violence by the extremist group could sweep the country.

"The country's leadership should not view the incessant attacks as mere temporary misfortune with which the citizenry must learn to live; they are precursors to events that could destabilize the entire country," their statement read.

The government has so fair failed to calm public anger over the spiraling gasoline costs. The government has promised that the $8 billion in estimated savings a year from the end of the fuel subsidies would go toward badly needed road and public projects.

One protester in Lagos held his protest sign upside down.

"Our life is already turned upside down," he told a reporter. "It is not how it's supposed to be."

Demonstrators burned a patrol car and a private car parked next to it in the northern city of Kano, filling the sky with billows of smoke as thousands protested below. Some in Nigeria's second-largest city are asking for the government to restore the subsidy. Others want Jonathan to resign. "He cannot rule this country," a placard read.

Some protesters also brought down a fence to the seat of the state of government in Kano where security officers used tear gas and fired at the crowd to keep them from entering the premises.

Eighteen people were wounded in the shootings and stampede that followed, said Dr. Kabiru Abdulsalam, spokesman for the Nigerian Medical Association of Kano.

Hopes for reversing age-associated effects in MS patients

ScienceDaily (Jan. 6, 2012) ? New research highlights the possibility of reversing ageing in the central nervous system for multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. The study is published on January 6, in the journal Cell Stem Cell.

As we get older, our bodies' ability to regenerate decreases. This is not only true for our skin (which is evident in the wrinkles that develop as we age) but also true for other tissues in the body, including the regenerative processes in the brain. For diseases which often span several decades and are affected by regenerative processes, such as multiple sclerosis, this can have massive implications.

In multiple sclerosis, the insulating layers that protect nerve fibres in the brain, known as myelin sheaths, become damaged. The loss of myelin in the brain prevents nerve fibres from sending signals properly and will eventually lead to the loss of the nerve fibre itself. However, early in the disease, a regenerative process, or remyelination, occurs and the myelin sheaths are restored. Unfortunately, as people with MS age, remyelination decreases significantly, resulting in more nerve fibres being permanently lost.

However, a new study in mice shows that the age-associated decline in the regeneration of the nerve's myelin sheath, or remyelination, is reversible. The proof of principle study demonstrates that when old mice are exposed to the inflammatory cells (called monocytes) from young mice, the ageing remyelination process can be reversed.

Professor Robin Franklin, Director of the MS Society's Cambridge Centre for Myelin Repair at the University of Cambridge, said: "What we have shown in our study, carried out in collaboration with Dr Amy Wagers and colleagues at Harvard University, is that the age-associated decline in remyelination is reversible. We found that remyelination in old adult mice can be made to work as efficiently as it does in young adult mice.

"For individuals with MS, this means that in theory regenerative therapies will work throughout the duration of the disease. Specifically, it means that remyelination therapies do not need to be based on stem cell transplantation since the stem cells already present in the brain and spinal cord can be made to regenerate myelin -- regardless of the patient's age."

Dr Doug Brown, Head of Biomedical Research at the MS Society said: "We've invested heavily in myelin repair research and are pleased to see key discoveries such as this being made as a result.

"Professor Franklin and his team have made significant breakthroughs in recent years and this provides more encouraging progress in their tireless effort to develop therapies that might stop or reverse the devastating effects of MS."

MS affects approximately 100,000 people in the United Kingdom, 400,000 in the United States and several million worldwide. Symptoms of the disease can include the loss of physical skills, sensation, vision, bladder control, and intellectual abilities.

NATO: 5 troops killed in south Afghanistan

Roadside bombs killed five NATO service members in southern Afghanistan on Friday, the alliance said.

Detained members of Garda World private security company are seen near their confiscated arms during a news event in Kabul, Afghanistan, Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012. Two British nationals along with their Afghan colleagues from Garda World private security company operating in Kabul have been detained for alleged offences involving illegal weapons.

Roadside bombs killed five NATO service members in southern Afghanistan on Friday, the alliance said.

The deaths bring to nine the number of coalition troops killed since the start of the year.

At least 544 NATO troops died in Afghanistan in 2011. It was the second deadliest year for the coalition in the 10-year war.

Four troops died in one of Friday's bombings and one was killed in a separate blast. The alliance said both incidents occurred in southern Afghanistan but provided no further details.

U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan have surged since 2009 and the government's army and police have rapidly expanded, resulting in the capture and killing of thousands of insurgents. Nonetheless, the guerrillas have retained their capability to inflict losses on coalition forces.

Faced with overwhelming allied superiority in numbers and firepower, the Taliban largely avoid direct combat, relying instead on roadside bombs, small ambushes and hit-and-run tactics to harass NATO and government forces.

Taliban military activities typically abate during the winter months, due to heavy snows and bitter cold in the rough mountain terrain.

Ecuador court upholds ruling against Chevron (AP)

QUITO, Ecuador ? An appeals court in Ecuador upheld an $18 billion ruling against Chevron Corp. on Tuesday for oil pollution in the Amazon rain forest more than two decades ago.

The ruling confirmed a February judgment in the case. The Ecuadorean plaintiffs said in a statement that the decision is based on scientific evidence presented at trial proving that waste had poisoned the water supply.

"The appellate court relied on a record that proved that Chevron has violated the rights of the communities where it operates," the plaintiffs said in the emailed statement.

The lawsuit deals with pollution of the rain forest by energy company Texaco, which Chevron bought in 2001.

Chevron denounced the appeals court's decision and said it will continue to seek recourse in other courts outside Ecuador.

"Today's decision is another glaring example of the politicization and corruption of Ecuador's judiciary that has plagued this fraudulent case from the start," Chevron said in a statement.

The San Ramon, California-based company has previously alleged fraud in the lawsuit. The plaintiffs have also accused Chevron of defrauding the Ecuadorean court to hide the scale of the oil contamination.

By the time of last year's judgment, the case had been winding its way through U.S. and Ecuadorean courts for more than 17 years.

The suit was originally filed in a New York federal court in 1993 against Texaco and dismissed three years later after the oil company argued that Ecuador was the proper venue to hear the case. The suit was refiled in Ecuador in 2003.

Though it had only 47 named plaintiffs, the lawsuit sought damages on behalf of 30,000 people for environmental contamination and illnesses that allegedly resulted from Texaco's operation of an oil consortium from 1972 to 1990 in the rain forest.

Spurs' Ginobili to undergo surgery on broken hand

SAN ANTONIO (AP) ? Spurs guard Manu Ginobili will have surgery on his broken left hand and is expected to be out at least two months after his latest injury.

Ginobili tweeted Wednesday that he'll have a plate screwed onto his shooting hand Thursday. He broke his fifth metacarpal, below his pinkie, during the second quarter of a loss at Minnesota on Monday night.

"Not thrilled," Ginobili tweeted.

Ginobili was averaging 17.4 points a game, and San Antonio won't easily make up for losing its leading scorer who has overtaken Tim Duncan as the emotional and offensive centerpiece of the four-time champion Spurs.

Last season, after the 34-year-old sprained his elbow on the eve of the playoffs, Ginobili struggled through the first round wearing a bulky sleeve as Memphis upset the 61-win Spurs. Three years ago, Ginobili missed the postseason entirely with a bad ankle.

Although San Antonio's supporting cast this season is among the youngest of the Duncan era, the fate and fortunes of the Spurs still squarely rest with Ginobili, Tony Parker and Duncan, who will turn 36 in April and might be playing his final season.

Ginobili injured his hand in the season's fifth game when he fouled Anthony Tolliver as he jumped to shoot the ball.

"Six to eight weeks is the most common things that's been thrown around, so I assume that's what it is unless the docs figure out differently tomorrow," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

The Spurs host Golden State on Wednesday night.

Ginobili's injury is forcing the Spurs to put backup Gary Neal in uniform ahead of schedule after the second-year shooting guard had his appendix removed during training camp. Popovich said Neal would have certainly first played a few D-League games otherwise, but that's a luxury the Spurs can no longer afford.

"We figured we might as well go ahead and throw him in to the fire," Popovich said.

Debate over who needs a thyroid check in pregnancy (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Check-ups during pregnancy tend to focus around the waist. But there's growing debate about which mothers-to-be should have a gland in their neck tested, too.

Numerous studies since 1999 have found that an underactive thyroid can raise a woman's risk of miscarriage, premature birth, or a lower IQ for her baby ? even if it's so mildly sluggish that she feels no symptoms.

The problem: While serious cases are treated with a hormone pill, so far there's little evidence that treating the milder cases makes a difference. So guidelines about who should be tested vary widely.

Now a peek at prenatal testing from one of the country's largest medical labs suggests that nearly a quarter of pregnant women are getting the simple thyroid blood test regardless of whether they have symptoms.

Researchers at Quest Diagnostics examined records for half a million pregnant women. Of those who got tested, a higher-than-expected number ? 15 percent ? had an underactive thyroid. That's five-fold higher than some previous estimates, partly because the way in which the condition is diagnosed has changed recently, says the study published by the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

The vast majority of those women were in the gray zone, with milder cases where no one knows for sure if a diagnosis helps or wastes money on testing and thyroid medication.

The finding adds pressure for science to settle this long-running controversy.

"We still don't have perfect answers," says Dr. Elizabeth Pearce, a well-known endocrinologist at Boston Medical Center, where a recent survey found widespread prenatal thyroid testing. But, "if it's my patient in my office, or it's me or my family member, I'm going to treat every time."

Obstetricians seem more wary.

"There are studies on both sides of the fence," says Dr. Dena Goffman of New York's Montefiore Medical Center, which tests only women at high risk. "If you don't know what to do with the results, you probably shouldn't order the test," she said.

The unassuming thyroid ? a small bow tie-shaped gland nestled in the front of the neck ? plays a big role in good health for everyone. It produces hormones that regulate metabolism and can affect almost every type of tissue in the body. About 20 million Americans are estimated to have a malfunctioning thyroid that, if serious enough, can contribute to heart disease, bone-thinning osteoporosis and infertility.

An overactive thyroid, called hyperthyroidism, speeds up bodily functions, causing such symptoms as weight loss, nervousness, anxiety and increased heart rate and vision problems.

Much more common is an underactive thyroid, called hypothyroidism. It slows body functions, causing such problems as fatigue, weight gain, depression, constipation and dry skin. It even can contribute to high cholesterol, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Thyroid problems increase with age, but they affect far more women than men ? and pregnancy puts extra stress on the gland.

Having enough thyroid hormones is important for fetal brain development, especially during the first trimester, when the fetus depends solely on the mother for them. The hormones also play a role in avoiding miscarriage or premature birth.

Mothers also may harbor immune system cells called antibodies that subtly attack the gland and likewise are linked to miscarriage and prematurity. Italian researchers found that treating those women lowered their risk of encountering this problem.

There is broad agreement that women with overt hypothyroidism ? a seriously underactive gland ? should be treated, most likely given a once-a-day hormone pill long known to be safe in pregnancy. But it takes blood testing to diagnose overt disease because even those women don't always report the vague symptoms.

Those $25 blood tests are sure to uncover women with mild hypothyroidism, too, the people in the so-called gray zone. Some research has raised questions about whether mild cases really pose a pregnancy risk, and preliminary results from a large British study recently found no overall IQ benefit to the resulting children if their mothers had been treated.

But the damage might already have been done by the time treatment began late in the first trimester, notes Boston's Pearce. In the U.S., doctors are anxiously awaiting a similar National Institutes of Health study; results aren't expected until 2015.

What's the advice until then? The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends testing only pregnant women who have thyroid symptoms, have had previous thyroid problems, or have similar autoimmune diseases such as Type 1 diabetes ? those considered at risk for overt disease.

The American Thyroid Association goes further. Last summer it advised also testing all pregnant women age 30 and older, and those with enlarged thyroids, previous pregnancy problems or those who are obese, says Pearce, who co-authored the guidelines.

Most guidelines cite the lack of evidence for treating mild cases. The thyroid association does urge treatment if those women harbor the worrisome antibodies.

A final tip: Pregnant women should check that their prenatal vitamins contain iodine, important for proper thyroid function, Pearce says. Not all do. Most Americans get enough iodine from dairy products, bread, seafood and iodized table salt. But women need extra during pregnancy.

China's Hu lauds military promotion for young Kim (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? Chinese President Hu Jintao sent congratulations to North Korea's Kim Jong-un on Saturday on his appointment as supreme military leader, in Beijing's most direct show of support for the young and untested successor to his father Kim Jong-il.

Hu's message, issued on the Chinese government's website (www.gov.cn), lauded the younger Kim's military promotion, which consolidated his status as the top leader of the North.

"There is a deep tradition of friendship between the peoples and the military forces of China and North Korea," said Hu, according to the statement.

"The traditional friendly cooperation between China and North Korea is sure to constantly consolidate and strengthen."

Hu's message was Beijing's latest display of support for Kim, whose country, economically threadbare and politically isolated, depends heavily on China, its sole major ally.

North Korea announced earlier in the day that it had appointed Kim Jong-un as supreme commander of its 1.2 million-strong military, two days after official mourning for his father ended.

Since Kim Jong-il's death on December 17, the North's state media have already dubbed Kim Jong-un "supreme commander."

Soon after the elder Kim's death was announced, China voiced "confidence" in Kim Jong-un, who is in his late twenties and was barely known to the outside world before his father designated him his successor-in-waiting.

Hu also made a rare visit to North Korea's embassy in Beijing to offer condolences.

China sees neighboring North Korea as a strategic barrier against the United States and its regional allies, and has made clear that it considers preserving its influence in the North a foreign policy priority.

But that goal comes with an economic and diplomatic price.

China's trade and aid are crucial to Pyongyang's survival, but bring only puny economic gains to Beijing.

In October 2006, North Korea carried out its first nuclear test explosion, defying public pleas from China, and nuclear disarmament negotiations hosted by Beijing have languished for years without fresh progress or even fresh talks.

Alibaba Hired Duberstein Group for Washington Lobbying Help

December 30, 2011, 8:04 PM EST

By Ian King

(Updates share price in second-to-last paragraph.)

Dec. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. hired Washington lobbying firm Duberstein Group Inc. earlier this year as it explored potential transactions involving Yahoo! Inc.

Duberstein, founded by Kenneth Duberstein, a former chief of staff under President Ronald Reagan, disclosed its affiliation with Alibaba?s legal representatives in a filing this month.

Alibaba, China?s largest e-commerce business, has sought to buy back a stake that Yahoo owns in the company. It stepped up efforts to make a deal after the September ouster of Yahoo Chief Executive Officer Carol Bartz, who opposed a sale. Yahoo also is considering proposals by private-equity firms seeking to buy minority stakes, people with knowledge of the talks have said.

Yahoo?s 40 percent stake in Alibaba has given it a piece of the fast-growing Chinese market, helping maintain the U.S. Internet company?s value even as it loses ground to Google Inc. and Facebook Inc. Yahoo acquired the stake in Hangzhou, China- based Alibaba for about $1 billion in 2005.

Yahoo has considered offers for a minority stake from bidders such as TPG Capital and a group led by Silver Lake, people familiar with the matter have said. Silver Lake?s bid valued Yahoo at about $16.60 a share, these people said. TPG Capital?s offer was higher, they said.

Huawei?s Example

Alibaba?s involvement in a deal may draw scrutiny from the U.S. government, especially because Yahoo handles online communications for millions of Americans.

In 2008, China?s Huawei Technologies Co. dropped a bid for Marlborough, Massachusetts-based computer-equipment maker 3Com Corp. after the U.S. government began investigating whether a deal would give China access to technology used by the Defense Department.

John Spelich, an Alibaba spokesman, declined to comment, as did Dana Lengkeek, a spokeswoman for Sunnyvale, California-based Yahoo. The Duberstein Group said it doesn?t comment on its clients.

Yahoo shares rose 2.2 percent to $16.13 at the close in New York. The stock has declined 3 percent this year.

Alibaba hiring Duberstein was previously reported by Reuters.
